Trevor Pallisco is a Windsor-based mixed media artist who’s subject matter focuses on landscapes and abstract mark-making in the forms of drawing, painting, and sculpture. He incorporates metal, wood, rust, and more into his artworks to create organic three dimensional forms.
Artist Statement
My art practice is process oriented, with an emphasis on experimenting with materials, tools, and techniques. I am drawn to working with wood and metal because of the physicality of these materials and their three-dimensionality. I often use landscape as a subject matter to convey my concepts of self-expression and emotion.
My work has become process and materially driven by letting my experimentation with materials, technique, and tools drive towards my concepts. Using metal and car parts as my supports help create my vast, spacious landscapes and moody atmospheres. This is conveyed using fast, gestural mark making; that feels natural and are made intuitively, becoming a form of meditation for me. I like to think these marks stem from a kind of ‘doodling’ that I have always been drawn to making. The tactility of the materials, tools, and processes allow me to make large gestural movements in my work. This is something that I’ve been able to apply to all the mediums I work in despite how vastly different they are from each other.
My background in painting and drawing allows me to combine the more painterly side of me into my sculptural work by creating those gestural forms in three-dimensional materials; sometimes ‘drawing’ with the tools. The Theme of gesture is prominent in my artwork; forms and lines always needing to flow together to create movement. This helps bring forth the self- expression in my artwork, often making movements and rendering landscapes based off my emotions. My landscapes can be stormy and turbulent yet subtle from the spaciousness and muted colours.
I think that the process of experimenting with materials is crucial to developing my themes of self-expression and imbedding my emotions into my work. Working with more physical materials and using gestural movements help me achieve this; as well as using landscape as a main subject matter.
